Review of the year 2006

It has been a ‘Roman tastic’ year with our visits to Segontium Fort in Caernarfon and our trip to Chester. We all braved the cold weather in January to tread in the footsteps of the soldiers in the fort. I think we scared a few passers by when we dressed up as Roman Legionaries.
We learnt about the crossing of the Menai Straits. This will become more important in 2007. Thomas Telford was born in 1757 so it is his 250th Anniversary Year.
I really enjoyed the session on underwater archaeology. I was surprised at the sort of things Mike was able to bring for us to see. It is rare to be able to handle finds in that way, especially those pistols.

The surveying we did at Eglwys Llaniestyn will be useful to you on any archaeological site. Measuring accurately is essential. The observation skills you all showed when looking at the graves were excellent. You would all make excellent detectives too.

We had such an exciting summer. The Roundhouses at Melin Llynnon look amazing and we have been so spoilt being allowed inside before anyone else. I think we will all look back on this project and be proud to have the site on Anglesey.
We shall have our own digging equipment this year thanks to all your efforts for the sponsored site visit. It was a lovely sunny day. Who thinks we need harder clues next year? You did the club proud by your hard work collecting all the money.
I would like to say thanks to Will who let us dig at Dolwyddelan again this year. Look in the ‘Photo Gallery’ to see all the pictures.
Nina of Gwynedd Archaeological Trust gave us an in depth session on Aerial Photography and map reading. It is quite a heavy topic but used on a daily basis in Archaeology. If anyone has any questions or would like to go over it again please email Amanda.
What an ace Christmas party. Did anyone see the Ghost? Your costumes were fantastic. Thank you for all the food. You are all excellent cooks as well as archaeologists.
Please all add your comments to this review of how you felt the sessions went and any memories you would like to share.
